Background of the Study
Ancient markets in Iseyin Local Government Area, Oyo State, serve as pivotal nodes in the historical trade and cultural exchange networks of the region. These markets, with their remnants of old trading routes, architectural vestiges, and spatial organization, offer critical insights into pre-colonial economic and social structures (Afolabi, 2023). Archaeological investigations reveal that these marketplaces were not only centers of commerce but also hubs for social interaction, cultural diffusion, and community governance (Balogun, 2024). As urbanization advances, many of these ancient sites face degradation, raising concerns about the loss of tangible cultural heritage. The study explores how ancient market structures contribute to our understanding of historical trade practices, social stratification, and community dynamics. The integration of archaeological data with historical records provides a comprehensive picture of how ancient economic activities shaped regional development and cultural identity (Olanrewaju, 2023). This research aims to preserve the narrative of ancient markets, ensuring that their archaeological significance is recognized and integrated into modern heritage management strategies (Olu, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Ancient market sites in Iseyin are increasingly at risk due to urban expansion and inadequate conservation efforts. The deterioration of these sites leads to a loss of valuable historical data and undermines the understanding of past economic and social dynamics (Adeyemi, 2023). Limited research and insufficient funding contribute to the neglect of these archaeological treasures. Consequently, the cultural legacy of ancient trade practices remains poorly documented, hindering efforts to promote heritage tourism and community pride (Oyekan, 2024). This study seeks to address these gaps by evaluating the archaeological significance of ancient markets in the area.

Objectives of the Study:

  • To document the archaeological features of ancient markets in Iseyin.

  • To assess the role of these markets in historical economic and social structures.

  • To recommend conservation strategies for preserving ancient market sites.

Research Questions:

  • What are the key archaeological characteristics of ancient markets in Iseyin?

  • How did these markets influence regional trade and community dynamics?

  • Which conservation methods can best preserve the archaeological integrity of these sites?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Ancient market sites possess significant archaeological value.

  • H2: These markets played a crucial role in shaping historical economic networks.

  • H3: Effective conservation strategies can enhance the preservation of ancient market heritage.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant for historians, archaeologists, and cultural heritage managers by documenting the archaeological importance of ancient markets. Its findings will support heritage preservation efforts and stimulate community engagement in conserving historical trade centers. The research bridges academic inquiry with practical conservation measures, ensuring that the legacy of ancient marketplaces continues to inform modern cultural and economic narratives (Ireti, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to evaluating the archaeological significance of ancient markets in Iseyin Local Government Area, Oyo State, focusing solely on historical market structures and excluding modern commercial developments.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Ancient Markets: Historic centers of trade and social interaction with enduring cultural significance.

  • Archaeological Significance: The value of physical remains in providing insights into past human activities.

  • Heritage Management: The practice of preserving and promoting cultural and historical assets.
